Black religiosity
a biblical and historical perspective
Even though the practice of religion was outlawed for slaves beginning in the early 1600s, they often met in secret to worship; nothing could erase their belief in God and their commitment to family. In Black Religiosity: A Biblical and Historical Perspective, Dr. E. G. Sherman presents a collection of essays focusing on the eclectic religious experiences of the African American people from the beginning of slavery in 1619 through emancipation in 1863.
Through these previously voiced sermons and lectures, Sherman documents the fact that African descendants were exposed to and participated in Christianity even before the advent of slavery. It communicates the emphasis the enslaved people placed on God as they coped with inhumane conditions and how their faith, prayer, and worship helped them survive and leave a legacy.
Black Religiosity: A Biblical and Historical Perspective serves as a practical resource and reference reviewing the early black religious experiences and the importance of that spiritual anchor.

Children
biblican and ethical teaching
The Public School systems generally place little, if any, emphasis on biblical and ethical training; yet such exposure is essential for the "well rounded" child. In Children: Biblical and Ethical Trainings, Dr. E. G. Sherman presents a collection of thirty six topics used in the Children Altar Call at the church where he pastors. Th e topics, one page in length, are selected from the Bible or Children Literature. Each message seeks to instill biblical facts and/or ethical principles.
This book has a review guide at the end of the messages that can be used for family bible study and/or review by the child. It can also serve as a guide for the "Ole Back Yard" Bible study and personal witnesses to others.
Children: Biblical and Ethical Teachings is a valuable resource for a home collection of biblical resources. Additionally, members of the clergy will find it useful to gain insights for short talks and even exploring topics for sermons.

The christian family
a biblical perspective
This book is an eclectic study of some dimensions of the Christian Family. It is a Bible based analysis. Th is family is a monogamous union with at least one child. Th e father (husband) loves his wife (Eph. 5:25); provides substance for his family (Lk.11:11-13), and trains the child (Pr. 22:6). Th e wife respects/submits herself unto her husband (Eph. 5:22), is industrious in household chores and receives the blessing and praises of her children and husband (Pr. 31:28). She is, also, involved in the socialization-training-of the child/children. Th e child, as enjoined by the Bible, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right..." (Eph. 5:1-3). Lastly, the children are to be brought... "Up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord", a major responsibility of the father. (Eph.5:4)
This book is a valuable resource for addition to the innumerable Sources on family life and child rearing. Unlike the secular orientation of most books and journal, The Christian Family is firmly anchored in biblical teachings. It can be used for family home study, both with the total family gathers or within an individual reading. Additionally, it has relevance for the clergy and/or Christian Education leaders as they prepare for their sermons and/or lectures on some aspects of the Christian family life.
